The month of September has seen a number of music artists such as Chris Brown, Ellie Goulding, Demi Lovato, Sia and many more, each introduce a brand new single for people around the world to listen to and enjoy. If you would like to look at the list of new singles as well click here. Among these singles there were some that just resonated with me and created this euphoria that I feel when I discover a song I enjoy. Some examples include, “On My Mind” by Ellie Goulding, “Until You Were Gone” by The Chainsmokers, “Zero” by Chris Brown, however, out of all of the songs I listened to “Alive” by Sia really stood out to me.
The backbone behind “Alive” is Sia’s voice, which conveys emotion and power about this song and helps to really bring forth life and purpose within the song. The lyrics also serve to support her voice which add this layer of depth to the song. For example, throughout the song there is this constant repetition of “I’m still breathing” and “I’m alive” which sends out a message to the listener that there is this great sense of struggle occurring throughout the song. The way the lyrics are written makes it sound as though the world were against her and was trying to bring her down, but she wouldn’t let it. So, she struggled and persevered clinging to life despite all the pain and torment, she survived.
When I first heard these lyrics I just nodded my head because I to could understand what it’s like to struggle and persevere. I was once in a dark place in my life and I had considered ending it all because at the time, I couldn’t see past the present and look into the future. However, I endured and eventually I began to see past the dark clouds and look at the more positive side of things. Recently, I have been reading a book called Thank You for Arguing by Jay Heinrichs, in this book Heinrichs talks about how “Argument by character starts with your audience’s love.” In short, if you can get your listeners to love your character, then they will listen to what you have to say. I have fallen in love with Sia and I am definitely listening to what she has to say.
